The Hockaday Museum of Art is delighted to announce the winners of the Curator’s Choice Award and the People’s Choice Award for the New Artists 2018 exhibition.

The annual show, which opened Feb. 23, features impressive works by talented young artists attending local high schools.

Ali Dalton, a junior at Glacier High School, won this year’s Curator’s Choice Award. McKenna Flannigan, a sophomore who takes art classes at Heritage Learning, won the People’s Choice Award.

Dalton’s piece, “Haloed Dreamer,” is a dramatic photo that uses light and darkness to create a pattern on top of the subject. “I’ve always loved shadow and light photography,” Dalton said. “I wanted to mimic the way (photographer Solve Sundsbo) makes shadow designs on his subjects, but in a different fashion.” C.J. Cummings is her art instructor. The Curator’s Choice Award comes with a cash prize of $100 and a one-year membership to the Hockaday Museum of Art.

Flannigan’s painting, “Shaking Dog,” is a vivid mixed-media painting that uses paint spatter to give the effect of movement. Flannigan said she was inspired by the cute image of wet dogs shaking water off their coats and wanted to create a piece that showed that fluidity. Her art teacher is Susan Wagner. The People’s Choice Award comes with a one-year Hockaday Museum membership.

The New Artists 2018 exhibition includes a wide array of pieces selected by art teachers from Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Kalispell, Whitefish and surrounding areas. These featured works represent the best of the best from their respective schools. The exhibition remains on display through March 31.
