The math added up for 371 high school and middle school students from around northwestern Montana who converged at Flathead Valley Community College earlier this month to compete at the Montana Council of Teachers of Mathematics Math Contest.

School teams took a combination of individual and team tests on a variety of topics from intermediate to advanced mathematics, in both the middle school and high school divisions.

Kalispell Middle School and Whitefish High School were recognized in their respective divisions based on scores and the number of individuals with superior ratings.

Alden Drew of Glacier High School and Jasmine Reese of Whitefish High School were each awarded $200 scholarships as the top high school male and female competitors.

Competition organizers also recognized a middle and high school student with the highest percentage of correct answers. Kalispell Middle School eighth-grader Mason Fauth, with 84.8 percent correct, and Whitefish High School 11th-grader Annie Sullivan, with 73.3 percent correct, were awarded graphing calculators.

The close team competition resulted in several ties for the top three spots.

The Kalispell teams included: Michael Downs, Mason Fauth, Hannah Klassy, Dyson Linden and Thomas Putnam; and Alexandra Houseworth, Neila Lyngholm, Bailey Mainolfi and Caden Masa. Top scorers in the 11th and 12th grades were divided into a group “A” and “B,” based on what tests were taken. Annie Sullivan of Whitefish High School was the top student in the 11th- and 12th-grade A group. Glacier High School’s Evan Kohler was the top student in the 11th-grade B group and Glacier High School’s Alden Drew was top for the 12th-grade B group.
