Black and Blue romp at Spokane 7s rugby event
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Black and Blue A rugby team dominated the Spokane 7s tournament on Saturday, blowing out four teams to finish the day unbeaten.
Black and Blue crushed Spokane A in the championship game, 34-0.
“Our A side started a little slow,” Black and Blue coach Robert Kiesel said.
“But they put it to everybody (after that). There wasn’t a close match.”
The Black and Blue beat Moscow, Idaho, Northern Idaho and Spokane B before the title test.
In 7s play, games are 14 minutes long (two seven minute halves).
Kiesel said Connor DeRue, an inside center, “ran rampant. Hunter Wellcome and Daniel Long were everywhere. Tucker Nadeau, he does everything.”
Nate Davidson had two tries for the Black and Blue. DeRue, Wellcome, Long and Nadeau also scored.
Black and Blue won the Missoula 7s tournament last weekend to raise its record to 7-2.
The team was scheduled to play at the Bitterroot Warriors in Corvallis on Saturday, but that outing was postponed until a later date. The Warriors, because of Spring Break, did not have enough players. That allowed the Black and Blue to play in Spokane.
The Black and Blue B side went 2-1-1 in Spokane on Saturday.
The only home match of the season for the Black and Blue is Saturday versus the Spokane Goth at Evergreen Junior High School at 1 p.m. The Black and Blue JV and girls team will also be in action.
Following that outing, the Black and Blue face Frenchtown, Missoula and have the make-up game with Bitterroot before state tournament action in Missoula on May 12th.
