Student writing contest winners announced

Six local high school students are winners in the annual writing contest sponsored by the Authors of the Flathead. In addition to cash prizes, the first place recipients receive an added bonus this year: full scholarships to the 28th annual Flathead River Writers Conference September 22-23, donated by the late Don Ryan, longtime member. On June 7, winners will read their work at the Authors of the Flathead meeting, held at 7 p.m. at Flathead Valley Community College, Broussard Building, Room 118. The reading is open to the public. Short story winners are:

First place – “Hiraeth” by Paige Moriarty, 9th grade, Columbia Falls High School;

Second place – “Talking Tree” by Lakia Hill, 9th grade, Columbia Falls High School;

Third place – “My Anti Book Role Model” by Riley Hoveland, 12th grade, Bigfork High School.

Poetry winners are:

First place – “The Universe” by Amanda Sheppard, 12th grade, Stillwater Christian School;

Second place – “The Point of Defeat” by Nicole Burns, 11th grade, Flathead High School;

Third place – “Cold” by Myranda Poisant, 11th grade, Flathead High School.
