Glacier, Flathead sprint into state AA track meet

Annie Hill was the undisputed star of the 2017 Class AA state track and field meet.

The Glacier standout won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, placed second in the 400 and anchored the Wolfpack’s 4x400 relay team in a third-place showing.

Somehow, she’ll try to top that 39 1/2-point performance in her last hoorah as a high school athlete.

The Colorado commit will compete in the same five events this time around, and she, along with fellow senior Adrian Schnee, will be heavily relied on as Glacier tries to leave with a trophy for a third straight season.

“We’re asking a lot of (Hill),” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said. “Her and Adrian, our two seniors, are hopefully kind of the ones that are going to carry us.”

Schnee will compete in the 100, 300 hurdles and high jump individually and joins Hill on the 4x400 team.

Aside from Hill and Schnee, Boschee said Glacier’s 10 other qualifiers must scrap and claw for points wherever they can get them.

Their success in picking up those points will go a long way in determining whether the Wolfpack will be able to edge Billings Senior, Billings West, Missoula Hellgate and others for third place behind Missoula Sentinel and Bozeman, the far-and-away favorites to finish 1-2.

“We’ll see if they can come into this and be that underdog that can sneak in a few points,” Boschee said. “We can sneak in and get third, but it is a longshot. We’re definitely not a favorite to be in the top three teams.”

The Glacier boys, on the other hand, are anything but a longshot to finish third and could potentially accomplish even more.

A week removed from a Western AA championship, the Wolfpack enters with a strong, deep cast of sprinters and jumpers to go with several runners who could make noise in the middle distances.

Ethan Larson, Drew Turner and Mark Estes, in that order, hold the three fastest times in the state this year in the 400, and Larson and Turner have also impressed in the 100 and 200, respectively.

Glacier is expected to be similarly competitive in the jumps thanks in large part to Estes and Hunter Nicholson.

They hold the top two marks in Montana this season in the triple jump and are each likely to place in the long jump. Nicholson could also score in the high jump.

The Wolfpack’s two javelin throwers are also capable of competing for the state title, as Evan Todd and Bennett McChesney enter the state meet with the second- and fourth-best distances in the event this year.

Glacier also has a pair of strong relay teams, as the 4x100 and 4x400 squads enter with the first- and fourth-best times in Montana this season, respectively.

Flathead’s boys also have shown potential to place highly after a runner-up finish at divisionals last weekend.

The Braves are led in the distance events by Ben Perrin and also have a strong cast of hurdlers and throwers able to accumulate points.

Perrin is expected to challenge for the state title in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

Michael Lee could make it onto the podium in both the shot put and discus.

Chad Hemsley and Dawson Rinehart are favorites to win the 300 hurdles, and Camas Rinehart provides depth for Flathead in the same event. Hemsley and Dawson Rinehart also run the 110 hurdles.

Both Glacier and Flathead seek improvements in team scores from last year, when they finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Billings West, Billings Senior and Helena finished within three points of each other at the top of the boys field in 2017.

Madison Boles is likely to provide point for the Bravettes competing in the 200 and high jump.

The Flathead girls finished 13th last season.

Competition begins today at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls.

Class A

Area teams will look to improve on last year’s middling team finishes when they take to the track for the Class A state meet in Laurel beginning today.

Only one local team (the Columbia Falls boys, who came in fourth) finished higher than ninth place last year.

The team with perhaps the best chance to make a large leap in the team standings is Libby, which is in its first season back in Class A after a two-year stint in Class B.

The Logger girls finished 16th in Class B last year, and the boys were 27th.

But Libby coach Jim May is hopeful strong individual performances in several middle distance races paired with solid showings in the relays will produce better results this time around.

“If things go well this weekend, we’ll score more points than we have in a long time,” May said. “The team points always take care of themselves. If kids do what they’re supposed to do individually, they can get the points they’re supposed to get.”

Among the individuals from Libby are Gavin Strom, Jay Beagle and Emily Mossburg.

Strom has the top mark in Class A this year in the long jump and could also place in the long jump, while Beagle and Mossburg clocked the fastest times within their classification in the 400.

The Libby relay teams are “right in the hunt,” according to May, who also noted Shannon Reny could place in the girls shot put.

“Our goal is just to make sure we peak here, (make sure) that we’re running and throwing and jumping our best,” May said. “We’ve been working really hard all year to get that, and the kids are ready to go.”

Another team with an opportunity for a big jump in team points is Whitefish, which would potentially eclipse last year’s totals with its relay teams alone.

The boys 4x400 is tied for the top time in the state in Class A entering the state meet, and the girls 4x400 is first outright. The girls 4x100 is third.

Individually, Lee Walburn holds the top Class A time in the 300 hurdles.

The Bulldog girls and boys finished 14th and 16th, respectively, a year ago.

The highest-finishing area squad in 2017, the Columbia Falls boys, will look to battle for a spot on the podium once again this season with a strong cast of seniors competing in a multitude of events.

Ben Windauer, Austin Green, Logan Kolodejchuk, Gabe Knutson and Tucker Salmonson are all expected to provide points, as are juniors Drew Morgan and Tanner Gove.

“Our senior boys are going to do really well for us,” Columbia Falls coach Jamie Heinz said.

The Columbia Falls girls will be led by Angellica Street, the heavy favorite to win the javelin. Her best throw this year is more than 15 feet farther than that of her closest competitor.

Talia Sova could provide points in the shot put, discus and javelin, Heinz said.

The top individual performer from the area could very well be Polson’s Bea Frissell, who is among the favorites in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

The Polson boys are likely to be led by Colton Cote, whose 110 hurdles time is tops in Class A, and Quin Stewart, who has the second-fastest Class A time in the 800.

Miles City and Corvallis are the team favorites on the boys side. The Corvallis girls finished second last year and are expected to compete with dillon for the title.

The Belgrade girls and Sidney boys are defending state champions.
