GREAT FALLS — It wasn’t coffee that gave the Glacier boys track team the early-morning jolt it needed to really get revved up in its push for the program’s first state championship.

It was the javelin throwers.

Evan Todd uncorked a throw of 184 feet, 1 inch on his third and final attempt to overcome Missoula Sentinel’s Rylan Ortt for the individual title, and Bennett McChesney vaulted from seventh place all the way into third in his third attempt.

“In three minutes, you go from eight points to 16 points, and then our kids just kind of fed off that,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said.

The Wolfpack continued to feed off each other — and on its Class AA competition — throughout Saturday’s action at the Class AA state track and field meet on its way to a team victory that was as resounding as it was historic.

Glacier finished with 107 points, well clear of runner-up Flathead’s 76. The Braves also ran up an impressive margin, pulling away for a comfortable advantage over third-place Bozeman (45 points).

“Championships are exciting,” Deck said. “You need to be good. You need to be lucky. You need to take care of one another. It just kind of all came together. It’s huge for our kids.”

Glacier’s state title was perhaps most attributable to its depth.

The Wolfpack claimed multiple placers in seven of 15 individual events, including three in Friday’s 400-meter run.

Aside from Todd’s win in the javelin, the only individual win on Saturday came from Mark Estes in the triple jump (46 feet, 4.75 inches).

Ethan Larson and Drew Turner finished second in the 100 and 200, respectively.

Finishing third for Glacier were Larson in the 200, Elijah Boyd in the 800, Drew Deck in the 300 hurdles and McChesney in the javelin.

“Our senior group, they’ve had a lot of success in their high school career and have been very close,” Deck said. “I think you get to a point and finally, you just say, ‘We’ve gotta push through and make this happen.’”

Flathead also impressed with its performances en route to a second-place trophy.

Ben Perrin was victorious in the 3,200 (9:08.38), and the Braves finished 1-2 in the 300 hurdles with Chad Hemsley (38.09) edging teammate Dawson Rinehart by a little more than a second.

The pair finished second and third — in the same order — in the 110 hurdles.

Annie Hill capped off an illustrious prep career by defending her title in the 1,600 (4:51.62).

The Glacier girls finished sixth (39 points) as a team while Flathead came in 13th (6.5).

Missoula Sentinel girls won state with 113.
