Rough day for Flathead, Glacier soccer

Glacier managed to get the first score, but Helena High answered with a goal two minutes later and scored three more times in the second half for a 4-1 Western AA boys soccer win at Glacier High School on Friday.

“We played a great first half,” Glacier coach Ryan Billiet said.

Braden Nitschelm scored for Glacier with Parker Creer assisting. That came at 36 minutes.

Glacier outshot Helena on goal 18-11 and led in corner kicks 5-4.

“I thought we played really well for 70 minutes,” Billiet said.

“I feel good about the performance.”

Glacier (3-6 overall, 2-5 league) faces Helena Capital today at 11 a.m. at Glacier High School.

Helena Capital 4, Flathead 1

Helena Capital netted three shots in the second half to pull away from Flathead for the Western AA victory at Kidsports Complex.

Jalen Hawes scored for Flathead 10 minutes into play.

Flathead held a slim advantage in shots on goal, 6-4.

“We played with a lot of heart, we played well,” Flathead coach Zach Brenneman said. “It just wasn’t our day. One of those days where the soccer gods were not on our side.”

Flathead faces Helena High today at 11 a.m. at Kidsports Complex.

Helena High 4, Glacier 3

Glacier held a 3-1 lead on Helena High through 60 minutes of play before three late goals won it for the Bengals in a Western AA match at Glacier High School.

Taylor Brisendine scored twice in the first half, the second off a corner kick, as the Wolfpack held a 2-1 edge.

Glacier on an own goal after a shot by Madison Becker went on top 3-1 after 46 minutes.

Grace Lawlor, who netted Helena’s shot in the first half, scored at 61 minutes and Madie Mariegard had back-to-back goals during a four-minute stretch after that to lift the Bengals to the win.

Helena also trailed in the earlier meeting in Helena 2-0 before winning 5-3.

“Give credit to Helena High, they stuck around to win the game,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said.

Helena outshot Glacier on goal 14-9.

Sophie Smith had five keeper saves for Glacier and Ellie Keller four.

“We were playing with a lot of intensity,” Byrd said until the final 20 minutes.

Glacier (1-9-1, 1-8-0) hosts Helena Capital today at 9 a.m.

“I’m extremely happy with the play by Adison Powell,” Byrd said.

“She was outstanding today (as a striker and midfielder). Where ever we put her on the field, she was willing to give you 110 percent.”

Powell assisted on Brisendine’s goal in the 14th minute, give Glacier a quick 1-0 advantage.

Three first-half goals by Helena Capital was just enough to give the Bruins the Western AA victory over Flathead at Kidsports Complex.

The Bravettes made it close by scoring twice in the second half on shots by Shayenn Thompson and Ellie Hawes.
