Flathead sticks 1st conference volleyball loss on Helena High

HELENA — The Flathead Bravettes dealt Helena High (18-3 overall, 9-1 conference) its first Western AA loss of the volleyball season, winning 24-26, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 15-8 on Saturday.

Flathead improves to 13-9 and 7-3.

“Today was a huge challenge for us; Helena High is a really good team,” Flathead coach Nicole Fairclough said. “I am so proud of our girls for stepping up to the challenge and beating the first place team in our conference and the highest ranked team in the state. It’s extremely exciting to see us gaining confidence and momentum as we move into the last couple weeks of conference play.”

Flathead’s Julia Burden was a force with 15 kills, 16 digs and three blocks. Madde Boles served six aces and had 16 kills.

For Helena, Jamie Pickens had 15 kills and six blocks. Emily Feller had 39 assists.

HELENA — Helena Capital (19-2 overall, 9-1 conference) knocked off Glacier (7-15, 2-8) in straight sets 25-15, 25-18, 25-19.

Glacier’s Kaylee Fritz recorded 16 of 18 set assists and served six aces. Kynzie Mohl had seven kills.

Audrey Hofer had 21 set assists and 10 digs for Capital. Dani Bartsch had eight digs and four service aces.

Stillwater 1st at tourney

CRANBROOK, B.C. – The Stillwater Lady Cougars competed in the Mt. Baker Tournament and advanced to the final where they topped Fernie High to claim first place.

“This was a great opportunity for the girls in preparation for state tournament,” Stillwater coach Diane Smith said. “I was proud of my senior leaders stepping up and encouraging their team to step up when we were down. Great strength came off the bench to fill in when players needed a seat for some focus.”
