Something's bruin in Whitefish

| October 17, 2018 4:00 AM

What would a day in the Whitefish be without a bear incident? One caller said a bear was in a garbage can on Scott Avenue. Another caller said she had a bear at her house on Eighth Street and she reported spraying it. Later, she heard shots and thought someone was firing a gun at the bruin. An officer couldn’t find anything indicating a shooting had occurred.

A caller told the Whitefish Police Department that several teenagers stole Halloween decorations from his porch. The caller found them a block away when he went looking for them. An officer informed the caller about a warrant he had on him. He said he’d take care of it.

A woman said a man who her husband had fired three days ago, showed up at their Cedar Street home. She told him to leave and he tried to enter the home when she answered his knock. She put her hand on his chest and prevented him from entering. She said he seemed to be out of it. He eventually left.

Someone reported her fiance and her brother were fighting over a gun that the fiance had fired earlier. There were no injuries and one of the men involved in the fracas left the residence.

A man came to the police department in a very agitated state because he had been thrown out of a local bar after he asked for a black garbage bag. He also said he was tossed from the laundromat. A records check showed the man had a history of assaulting others.

Officers handled a succession of animal-related calls Sunday. Three included bears, including one that appeared to be sick and one that was in a tree. Another incident dealt with a deer that had to be put down and was destined for the food bank.

Then, on Monday, vehicles had to avoid a road-killed deer and other debris on U.S. 93.

And, last but not least, two more bear calls were received. One dealt with the momma bear and her two cubs that have been local celebrities. She reportedly went up a tree. In the other, a bear got into a garbage container that had been posted for not being secured. A citation would arrive in the mail for the offender.

A caller told the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office an aggressive pit bull was roaming the Lakeside area. When an officer investigated, he didn’t find any dogs that matched its description.

A motel owner reported to the Columbia Falls Police Department that a man driving a candy apple red truck entered the parking lot and sprayed gravel all over the place before exiting east on U.S. 2.
