Flathead Mini-Invitational Athletes brave the elements

Although it was a day more suited for duck hunting than high school sports, officials, coaches and athletes from area schools braved the less than favorable weather conditions to pull off the annual Flathead Mini-Invitational track and field meet at Legends Stadium on a very damp and cold Tuesday.

The meet began and ended in the rain with temperatures all day hovering in the 30s.

It was so bad that the pole vault for boys and girls was canceled because of the elements. Weather also affected the timing system during the 300 hurdles event for boys.

As a result, no team totals were kept.

“A few teams went home early,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said.

“Athletes were very wet, and when the wind started and temperatures dropped, it was not good for the ride home.”

Hodge said the conditions for this event might be the second worst he has experienced in his 40-plus years of coaching.

However ...

“Today was a good learning experience,” he said.

“Because the weather could be the same, or worse, at divisional or state. Today should teach them how to prepare for a meet with similar conditions.”

Three athletes managed to come away as double winners — Kennedy Kanter of Flathead in the 200 and long jump, Bea Frissell of Polson in the 1,600 and 3,200, and Mya McNeely of Glacier in the shot put and discus.

The all-day rain also forced cancellation of Flathead and Glacier home softball games versus Missoula Big Sky and Sentinel, along with home games in Polson, Ronan and for Eureka at St. Ignatius, which has already been rescheduled for Friday in Eureka at 3 and 5 p.m.
