The one-hour film “Era of Megafires” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts.
Fire-management professionals from neighboring fire departments, the Montana Department of Resources and Conservation, Flathead National Forest and Flathead County will be on hand to answer questions and provide resources.

Community band, choir join forces for concert
The Flathead Valley Community Band and Columbia Falls Community Choir present a May Music Spectacular concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the Flathead High School auditorium. Each group will present individual pieces before combining for a grand finale. The choir is directed by Steve Holte and the band is under the direction of Allen Slater.
These two long-standing community groups feature adult musicians who come together and create music at various locations in their communities. There is no admittance charge for the concert but donations will be taken.
Dahlia society holds tuber sale
The Montana Dahlia Society has its annual tuber sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4 at the Kalispell Center Mall.
The sale will be held inside at the west end of the mall. Tubers are priced at $2 each or six for $10. The group hopes to have dahlia plants in bloom, in addition to cuttings and seedlings available for $5 each. Members will be available to answer questions about growing dahlias.

Kids Count event in Evergreen
The Evergreen Chamber of Commerce annual Kids Count in Evergreen event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 2 at Evergreen Junior High School.
There will be free games, prizes and pizza.

Author to speak about Butte mine fire
Missoula author Doug Ammons will give a presentation about the 1917 Granite Mountain-Speculator Mine fire in Butte, the worst hard rock mining disaster in American history, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 29, at the Whitefish Community Library.
Ammons’ award-winning book “A Darkness Lit by Heroes” details the underground fire that claimed the lives of 168 men.
The book is based on 600 pages of eyewitness testimony, and the story is based on the historical facts. It is written as a novel from inside the miners’ experience as a normal shift spiraled out of control.

Flathead Democrats holding spring dinner
Tickets are still available for the Flathead Democrats spring dinner May 4 at Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish. Guest speakers include Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney, Maylinn Smith, co-director at Indian Law Clinic, and Monica Lindeen, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party.
Honored guest is Earl Old Person, honorary lifetime chief of the Blackfeet Nation. Born in 1929 and also named Cold Wind or Charging Home, Old Person is an American Indian political leader and the chief of the Blackfeet tribe in Montana. In July 1978, Old Person was appointed honorary lifetime Chief of the Blackfeet Nation. Old Person holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Montana. In 1998, he was awarded the Jeannette Rankin Civil Liberties Award by the American Civil Liberties Union of Montana. In 2007, he was inducted into the Montana Indian Hall of Fame.
Guitarist, pianist, and vocalist Dee L. Fleming will provide entertainment.
The social hour starts at 4:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6 p.m.

Hospice volunteers needed in Lake County
Lake County Home Options is seeking individuals to serve as hospice volunteers.
A comprehensive training program prepares individuals to provide caring support while enriching the lives of those with terminal illness. Through companionship and sharing skills and interests, a direct and real difference is made for those at the end of life.
The training series offers a balanced learning approach for volunteers, combining at-home study and office gatherings in Ronan. Personalized meetings explore a variety of topics providing knowledge and support for a successful and gratifying volunteer experience. ASSIST provides help after medical crisis
“Neighbors Helping Neighbors” is the mission of ASSIST, a volunteer program that helps people regain their health and independence after a hospitalization or other medical crisis.
The ASSIST volunteer organization is offering a free two-day workshop May 3 and May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kalispell Regional Medical Center’s Dietary East conference room. Lunch will be provided.
Anyone interested in learning more about community resources and who might want to be considered for a position as an ASSIST volunteer is welcome to attend.

“We’re connectors,” said Jane Latus Emmert, director of ASSIST. “In a crisis, nobody knows where to start. We can help folks connect to the community resources that can help them.”
ASSIST volunteers offer compassion, companionship and connections to resources in the community to help people recover their health and independence. ASSIST teams go into people’s homes and help them address the challenges they face. ASSIST volunteers connect people to agencies that provide services for food, housing, insurance, transportation and other needs.
Volunteers are asked to commit approximately four hours a week by either doing paperwork, research, visiting or calling to check in with clients on the phone. ASSIST acts strictly on referrals from the hospital and local clinics in Flathead County. There is no charge to the patient for services.
“We’re not medical,” Emmert said. “We are looking for problem-solving people who want to help their neighbors like a good friend would. They know somebody cares about their situation.”
Watch for workers maintaining safety markers
American Legion Post 137 will be maintaining the white highway safety markers identifying the locations of fatalities on state roads around Kalispell from May 4-25.
Crews will remove decorations and repair and repaint 127 markers in the Kalispell area along U.S. 93, U.S. 2, Montana 35 Montana 206, Farm to Market Road, Reserve Drive, Whitefish Stage and Airport Road.
Decorations that families would like to retain should be removed by May 4.
Drivers are asked to watch out for maintenance crews ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
