Final night, full house, but just a few changes in the final standings at the Northwest Montana Fair PRCA Rodeo at the Flathead County Fairgrounds.

Ranked cowboys and cowgirls established some lofty scores and fast times during the first two performances, so Saturday’s lineup faced a challenging task to overtake those standards.

And when the dust finally settled in the arena, there just two.

Tia Murphy of Cut Bank turned in a clean and speedy 17.20-second run in barrel racing to move to the top of the leader board.

And in steer wrestling, Montana cowboys Riley Joyce of Geraldine and Ross Mosher of Augusta posted back-to-back 4.1 second times to tie Jace Melvin, who notched a 4.1 second run for the lead during Thursday’s slack performance.

Other that than, 90 scores by Blade Elliott on Illegal Smile (Thursday) in bareback riding, Rusty Wright on Country Trail (Thursday) in saddle bronc riding and Sage Steele Kimzey on Excessive Force in bull riding (Friday) were unmatched.

All-around cowboy honors went to Landon Williams of Helena. He was third in tie-down roping and teamed up with Cody Tew of Belgrade to post the second best time in team roping on the final night,

Joyce and Mosher managed to pull off their winnings efforts on borrowed horses.

Joyce gave his the “night off” after a busy summer of traveling.

“I knew I drew a good steer,” he said.

“I mounted on a buddy’s horse and it gave me a chance. The steer started strong and I just rode up to him, got off in the middle. Everything fell into place after that.”

This was Joyce’s first trip to the fair rodeo.

“It felt good, really good,” he said.

Mosher, on the other hand, has been here “five or six times,” he said.

“I love this rodeo. I’ve done really well here, but never won it. Placed a bunch of times.”

Until Saturday evening.

“Good money, good crowd, good everything,” he said.

Mosher was one of four cowboys to ride Bryant Mikkelson’s horse. Mikkelson of Buffalo, however, did not post a time while the others did.

“Good start, caught the steer and the horse did his part,” Mosher said.

“I did mine and the steer did his. It all worked out.”

This was the fourth rodeo of the week for Mosher. Earlier, he was in Baker, Billings and Circle.

Mosher’s dad Kent was an event winner here years ago. So winning here for the first time was extra special.

“I must carry on the family tradition,” Mosher said while flashing a smile. “This was always his favorite rodeo, too.”
