WHITEFISH — The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) has chosen the Whitefish Marathon as the 2020 RRCA Marathon State Championship race. The race, which is on May 16, 2020, starts and finishes in downtown Whitefish and showcases the beautiful surroundings of Whitefish and Glacier National Park on an all-road certified course.

Since 1958, the RRCA has awarded championship events through a competitive bidding process at the National, Regional, and State level to RRCA member events to promote the sport of distance running. As the RRCA State Championship race for Montana, athletes running the Whitefish Marathon will have the opportunity to compete for special awards in the categories of Open, Master (40 years+), Grand Master (50 years+), and Senior Grand Master (60 years+) for male and females.

Any athlete from the state of Montana who is registered for the Whitefish Marathon is automatically eligible for the RRCA State Championship award.

“The RRCA State Championship designation recognizes our efforts to create a premier race in Montana that offers competition for athletes ranging from the elite to those who would like to experience the atmosphere of race day for the first time,” said Whitefish Race Director Todd Oliver. “We are proud of this recognition by the Road Runner’s Club of America and look forward to continuing to grow the Whitefish Marathon.”

About the Whitefish Marathon: Designed to highlight the amazing scenery of Whitefish, Montana and the area’s nearby Whitefish Mountain Resort (Big Mountain) and Glacier National Park, the Whitefish Marathon offers runners a scenic road course with beautiful views and clean mountain air.

The event offers a marathon, half marathon and a 5K. The Whitefish Marathon event is owned and hosted by The Wave Aquatic and Fitness Center and is the primary fundraiser for The Wave’s Scholarship Fund, which enables those with financial needs to obtain membership at the center.
