Fred Nelson, 91

Fred Nelson, 91, a longtime music educator in western Montana, died Dec. 5, 2019, at Libby.

Born Nov. 28, 1928, in Kalispell to Ray Nelson and Martha O’Brien Nelson, he attended grade school in Kalispell and later attended school in Anaconda, graduating from Anaconda High School in 1947.

He received a Bachelor or Arts degree in music from University of Montana and, following his military service, was director of bands in Polson, Libby and Sentinel High School in Missoula.

Surviving him are his sons, Niles Nelson and wife Bobbie of Libby, Dale Nelson of Polson, and Grant Nelson and wife Marybeth of El Cajon, California; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A visitation in Libby will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 11, at Schnackenberg Funeral Home. Funeral services in Missoula will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Garden City Funeral Home with a reception immediately following in the funeral home hospitality center. Committal will be at 2 p.m. at Missoula Cemetery.
