Mark Makers exhibit opens at Hockaday

The Hockaday Museum of Art announces Mark Makers, an exhibition by artists Linda Hendrickson, Shelle Lindholm and Sheri Trepina, that highlights the diversity and versatility in mark making, emphasizing it as a fundamental element of creating art.

Mark Makers’ opening reception is 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. Admission is free for museum members; $10 for nonmembers. Hendrickson, Lindholm and Trepina will also be leading a mark making workshop on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2. Call the Hockaday to register at 755-5268. Hendrickson, Lindholm and Trepina discovered their natural connection of mark making while painting together over the last few years. Hendrickson considers herself a “whimsical impressionist.” Within layers of paint dabbled, doodled, and dripped, lie fragments of sketches from her sketchbook, marks of brilliant fluorescent colors and thoughtful brush strokes. She says “painting is like a trail I hike. Step by step, layers of marks bring me to the subject and its happy life.”

Lindholm sees mark making as a portal into a good story. Multi-layers of color, pattern, and organic texture are essential to her for creating interesting and lively animal worlds. “Mark making opens my mind to different ways of painting familiar subjects,” Lindholm said.

Trepina sees mark making with real leaves as a method to document what she observes in nature now as well as the memories of the landscape of her youth. Sheri achieves rich textures and line through the layering of delicate papers and watercolor. She states, “Initial mark making is a key element that guides me through the painting.”
