The Glacier boys began the new year in agonizing fashion, falling 52-48 in overtime to Post Falls, Idaho, in thrilling nonference basketball action on Friday night at Glacier High School.
“They’re very frustrated. I think that’s a game they could have won, they know they could have won,” Glacier coach Mark Harkins said of his players.
“Unfortunately down the stretch we didn’t execute real well, but the effort was phenomenal.”
It was a back-and-forth affair, and the Wolfpack held a 44-39 lead with just over a minute to go in regulation. But the Trojans’ Isaac Ballow hit a long jump shot and Colby Gennett followed a Glacier turnover with a game-tying three-pointer from the corner with 25 seconds left.
Then Post Falls got a hand on Drew Engellant’s long jumper at the buzzer to force overtime.
Michael Schwarz nailed a triple to give Glacier a 47-46 advantage early in the extra period, but it was the Wolfpack’s only field goal in overtime as the Trojans outscored Glacier 8-4 to seal the win.
“That [Post Falls] is a very very good basketball team. They’ve been very successful in the season so far. And obviously we played with them,” Harkins said.
Post Falls came in with a 7-4 record and looked like the superior team early on, leading 13-7 after one quarter. But Glacier’s offense came alive in the second. Drew Engellant pounded the paint for 6 points in the frame and Ethan Baines had 8 of his 9 overall as the Wolfpack roared back to take a 25-22 halftime lead.
Engellant would finish the game with 12 points.
“He [Engellant] did a great job ... He’s a very skilled post player even though he’s not real big. He did a great job tonight. He’s a tough guard in there,” Harkins said.
Harkins also commended the efforts of Baines and Weston Price in the paint.
The Wolfpack came out sluggish in the second half and the Trojans took a quick 29-25 lead. But Glacier’s leading scorer Bret Michaels responded with 8 straight points, including two three-pointers, and the Wolfpack went on an 11-2 run to reclaim their advantage.
“He’s coming off an injury so we were really watching his minutes, first half especially,” Harkins said.
“He missed some shots early in the game, but shooters shoot, and he let them fly in that third quarter, had two big bombs from the corner. He’s a main focal point for our offense and he did a good job.”
Though the loss drops Glacier to 1-4, Harkins was pleased with his team’s attitude after the game.
“I’m glad we weren’t hi-fiving because we played hard. We were pretty disappointed we didn’t win,” he said.
“This team’s getting better, every game we’ve gotten better, and that’s what I love about them ... As long as we’re improving I’m okay.”
The Wolfpack will travel to Missoula Big Sky on Tuesday to open conference play before hosting the crosstown battle with Flathead on Friday.

Glacier let an early lead slip away and dropped a tight contest to Post Falls in a nonconference girls basketball clash at Glacier High School.
The Wolfpack (3-2) jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter and an 18-10 lead in the second. Aubrie Rademacher drove aggressively to the basket and had multiple steals while pacing the team with 8 first-half points en route to a team-high 10.
But the Trojans slowed down the Wolfpack with a switch to persistent full-court pressure, trimming the deficit before halftime.
The trend continued in the third quarter, as Raley Shirey scored all of Glacier’s 3 points in the frame. Then Post Falls’s Jayda Johnson nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 24.
The Trojans carried that momentum into the fourth, quickly taking their first lead of the game and building a 35-29 advantage with under three minutes to go. Glacier did not help itself from the charity stripe, going 2-of-8 on free throws in the final quarter.
The Wolfpack had a chance to force overtime, as the Trojans’ Dylan Lovett missed both her free throw attempts with two seconds left. But Glacier’s Raley Shirey could only manage a full-court heave off the rebound, which fell well short.
Kali Gulick had 7 points for the Wolfpack, and Shirey added 6.
Glacier will look to rebound on Tuesday at home against Missoula Big Sky.
