Kalispell brewfest celebrates local craft beers
Kalispell’s four craft breweries and the Brewing Academy at Flathead Valley Community College are hosting “Frosty the Brewfest” from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19.
The bands Jameson and the Sordid Seeds and Smart Alex will provide live music. There will be food vendors and outdoor events for the whole family, including a kids’ “dash for cash” and fat-tire bike races for the adults.
Valley Bank is hosting the event in its parking lot on the corner of Third Street West and First Avenue West, downtown Kalispell. Look for the big heated tent.
Adult tickets are $20 and include a commemorative ceramic mug and four drink tickets, each good for a six-ounce pour. Children under 12 are free and youth ages 13 to 20 are $5. Tickets will be available at the gate and this week at Bias Brewing, Kalispell Brewing Company, Sacred Waters Brewing Co. and SunRift Beer Company.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Kalispell Downtown Association and Flathead Community Foundation.

Great Fish Challenge focus of meeting
The Whitefish Community Foundation will hold an informational meeting about the 2019 Great Fish Community Challenge at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan.15, at Grouse Mountain Lodge in the Glacier Room.
The meeting will cover what is new for the fifth annual challenge and is open to all organizations that have participated in past campaigns. It is mandatory for organizations looking to participate in the campaign for the first time.
Nonprofits will also hear from Alan Myers-Davis from Whitefish Legacy Partners, Lori Heatherington from the Humane Society of Northwest Montana, and Deidre Corson from North Valley Music School, who will share their strategies for how each of these organizations successfully raised over $90,000 during the campaign. There is no charge to attend.

Father-daughter dance to be held in Whitefish
The annual Father-Daughter Winter Ball will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.
There will be a DJ and dancing, a photo booth, desserts and beverages.
The cost is $20 per couple and $7 per additional daughter.

Jazz talent from New York part of MLK Day event
Love Lives Here in the Flathead is collaborating with Groovetrail and Jazz at Lincoln Center for a celebration of the Rev. Martin Luther King Day.
The annual event will take place at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18, at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the celebration.
Rabbi Allen Secher and multi-instrumentalist Erica von Kleist have put together a special lineup of talent. Musicians from Von Kleist’s Groovetrail education program’s all-star Flathead Ellington Project will be performing alongside Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Academy alumni. These students, who have studied under trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, are traveling from New York City for this event.
The featured speaker is Wilmot Collins, mayor of Helena, who is the first black mayor in Montana. Collins is also a former refugee from Liberia who escaped that nation’s First Liberian Civil War in 1994. Since then, he has gained American citizenship, served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, worked for the Montana Department of Health and Human Services, raised a family and supported his community. He has been featured in national media and recently participated in the Cities of Solidarity Initiative panel at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Dialogue on Protection in Geneva.

Students invited to enter patriotic art contest
VFW Auxiliary Post 276 Whitefish welcomes all students in grades nine through 12 including home-schooled students who meet the qualifications to participate in its annual Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest.
