The 2019 Bob Marshall Wilderness Speaker Series presents a program titled “Wilderness Fisheries Management” from 7 to 8:15 p.m. March 6 in the Arts and Technology Building at Flathead Valley Community College. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Speakers include Jim Vashro, retired fisheries manager for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; Leo Rosenthal, Fish, Wildlife and Parks fisheries biologist; and Matt Boyer, Fish, Wildlife and Parks science program supervisor.
The three will describe efforts to preserve fisheries integrity in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Fish population estimates and creel surveys were first used to establish fishing regulations in the early 1980s. Subsequent census and bull trout management efforts will be discussed. Finally, the efforts to remove non-native rainbows and Yellowstone cutthroat trout to preserve the integrity of the South Fork will be discussed.
Documentary shows story of CASA kid
CASA for Kids presents a premiere showing of “This is My Story – Shyanne Clark,” a feature length documentary featuring Shyanne Clark, a local former foster youth, and her CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Carol McElwain, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 22. This is an exclusive premiere of the documentary during which Shyanne will be present to meet and interact with attendees. There will be food and refreshments, along with an opportunity to meet Shyanne.
The program will be held in the CASA for Kids Office, 1203 U.S. 2 W Ste. 37, Kalispell.

Electric co-op grant to help seniors with repairs
A $5,000 Roundup for Safety grant from Flathead Electric Cooperative will help senior citizens living in mobile homes make repairs they couldn’t otherwise make for themselves. “Many seniors have rotted-out, unsafe floors, porches and stairways, tagged furnaces, leaking water heaters and other problems that make their homes unsafe to live in,” said Jim Atkinson, who applied for the grant through the Agency on Aging. “Our objective is to make repairs necessary to keep them in their homes in a safe and sanitary environment.”
In addition to the Agency on Aging, Flathead Electric’s Roundup for Safety board also awarded grants for the following safety-related community projects, bringing the total awarded at the February meeting to $22,100:
• Lincoln County Community Health Center — $500 for lock boxes for opiate medication
• Bigfork High School — $2,800 for rock climbing gear
• Columbia Falls Baseball — $5,000 for bleachers
• South Kalispell Volunteer Fire Department — $5,000 for rescue equipment
• Glacier Lacrosse Club — $500 for helmets
• ImagineIF Library Foundation — $1,500 for an ADA electric door opener
• Habitat for Humanity — $1,800 for hard hats and ladders.
Church hosts Chili Open to benefit animal charities
All Saints Church in Columbia Falls will host the 12th annual Chili Open Saturday, March 9.
This event benefits the Humane Society of Northwest Montana, the Flathead County Animal Shelter, the Spay and Neuter Task Force and Spay Montana. The golf tournament in the snow takes place on the church grounds.
There is room for 72 golfers in this Texas Scramble shotgun start with 36 teeing off at 10:30 a.m. and 36 teeing off at 12:45 p.m.
Lunch will be served at noon. During lunch there will be a silent auction. A vegetarian chili will also be available. Coffee and pastries are also complimentary before and after the two rounds of golf.
A Friends of the Chili Open event featuring wine, soft drinks and appetizers takes place the preceding Friday, March 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pomerantz home, 342 Plantation Drive, north of Kalispell off Whitefish Stage Road.
The green fees for golf on Saturday (which includes lunch and refreshments before and after golfing) are $20. The Friday night Friends of the Chili Open has a suggested donation of $20. Golfers can also purchase holes-in-one for $50 to lower a foursome’s score. The proceeds from both events and the auction will be divided equally among the four animal groups. The entire production cost of the events has been underwritten by the restaurants providing the lunch, members of the community, and All Saints Church.

Applications accepted for Master Gardener program
The Montana State University Extension, Flathead County office, is currently accepting applications for the 2019 Master Gardener Program.
This eight-week class will begin April 3 and will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Kalispell.
Topics include lawn care, growing vegetables, fruit and shade trees, annuals, perennials and shrubs.
