Hannah Schweikert picked up a signature victory Tuesday on the courts at Flathead Valley Community College and The Summit.

The Columbia Falls sophomore knocked off Polson’s Shea McGuinness, the defending Class A state champion, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in No. 1 girls singles play.

It was the first meeting for the two standouts this spring with a divisional rematch likely to follow next week, also at FVCC.

The Schweikert/McGuinness match started at FVCC, but was moved indoors to the Summit because of thunder and rain. It was the final match of the day.

“What I was impressed with was for Hannah just being a sophomore, she played like a senior,” Columbia Falls coach Gene Marcille said.

“She stayed focused even when things weren’t going her way. A great win.”

The Columbia Falls Wildkats also picked up a three-set win at No. 3 singles with Maria Garcia Vizcay, a foreign exchange student from Argentina, topping Taylor Bloomfield 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

Polson, however, dominated play in the other matches for a 5-2 Northwestern A dual win.

Columbia Falls wraps up regular-season action this week at Libby on Friday and hosting Corvallis and Hamilton on Saturday.

Boys

Polson 5, Columbia Falls 2

Polson pulled out wins at Nos. 1-2-3 singles and 2-3 doubles to clip Columbia Falls in Northwestern A dual action at FVCC.

Three matches went three sets with Colby Delvin and Matt Hobbs winning in singles and John Gilk and Camryn Lingle of Columbia Falls at doubles.

“Really excited about John and Camryn,” Columbia Falls coach Michelle Colliander said.

“They played Ronan, Libby and have won every matched they have played together. They are both athletic, they are clicking. That’s nice to see going into divisionals.”

Colliander said Gilk and Lingle “made fewer errors than Polson (in the third set). Their serves were going in, they were talking, which is important in doubles, and they had fun. That was good.”

Colliander say Colton Byrd was sharp in his victory at No. 3 singles.

“He had really good focus today,” she said.

“His last couple of matches have been going three sets, but today he stepped it up and got it done in two. That was nice to see.”
