Bear attacks llama near Whitefish

A black bear weighing approximately 150 pounds mortally wounded a llama on private property near Whitefish on Sunday, according to Flathead County Sheriff’s Office logs and information from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The caller, who had his gun out, said the bear kept circling the property. Other livestock was inside a closed barn. A veterinarian euthanized the llama and a bear specialist set a trap to try and capture the bear. FWP officials warn that bears are active right now and mostly in lower elevations awaiting the spring “green-up” when vegetation emerges as an abundant food source. Residents and recreationists are advised to be extra vigilant about bear awareness and remove or secure food attractants, use electric fencing to protect livestock and carry bear spray in the outdoors.

A man disappeared on Flathead Lake when he swam into the water to retrieve a kayak. His girlfriend called 911 after losing sight of the man. Luckily, he made it back to shore safely.

A knife was wielded during a confrontation between three men on Montana 35.

A man complained about an aggressive coworker texting him photos all day long, even after he blocked the number.

A man and two young children were reported missing after they failed to promptly return from a drive up Blacktail Mountain to look for rabbits. The search was called off when they showed up back home safely.

An employee was suspicious of three men who purportedly had dirty hands, were wearing dirty clothes and drove a “ratty” vehicle who went into a store, according to Kalispell Police Department logs. The employee thought the men were acting like they were trying to distract them and suspected they might be shoplifters and “sent the men on their way quickly.”

A mother allegedly ran away from a social worker with two children and got into a vehicle and then headed northbound on Fourth Avenue West. Information was relayed to Montana Highway Patrol and Border Patrol. Eventually, the mother went to police and the children went into custody of CPS.

Someone requested a welfare check on a 9-year-old who they apparently thought couldn’t fend for himself when he was seen unattended. The child was supposedly “left alone a lot” in what they believed was “a drug house,” but gave police a wrong address. Officers made contact with the child’s mother and the child was OK.

Another passerby reported three children left in a van for allegedly over an hour in a parking lot on Hutton Ranch Road. The person calling the report in spoke to the children and said they seemed fine and that their mom was supposed to come right out. Police determined the kids were all right and a teenager was taking care of the younger children.

A man was seen pacing violently and screaming in Woodland Park and appeared intoxicated. Police moved along one man who was not yelling while one man was detained. The distress may have been due to a matter of grief following a funeral.

A guest at a hotel was reportedly masturbating in front of a group of teens, according to Columbia Falls Police Department logs. When confronted about the situation, the man allegedly freaked out and threatened to cuts the teens’ heads off.

A yelling match turned physical when a man allegedly assaulted his son and the boy’s mother.

The back window was busted out of an office building. There wasn’t any evidence of tampering with office material.
