Northwestern A Divisional No surprises in singles play

There were no surprises in singles play on Wednesday at the Northwestern A Divisional tennis tournament on the courts at Flathead Valley Community College.

The three top girls — defending divisional and state champion Shea McGuinness of Polson, Hannah Schweikert of Columbia Falls and Gracie Smyley of Whitefish were all easy winners. Schweikert and Smyley both have regular season wins over McGuinness.

McGuinness, Schweikert and Claire Carloss of Whitefish were all 6-0, 6-0 winners.

Smyley won 6-0, 6-1.

Defending divisional champion Brendan Buls of Whitefish, Neils Getts of Columbia Falls, Jayce Cripe of Whitefish, Ryker McElmurry of Libby and Joe McDonald of Polson all cruised to the next round.

Buls and Cripe were 6-0, 6-0 winners.

Getts and McDonald won 6-1, 6-1 and McElmurry rolled 6-1, 6-0.

Play resumes today with girls singles at The Summit.

Boys singles and doubles and girls doubles will be played at Flathead Valley Community College, weather permitting.

If rain becomes an issue, all play will be moved to The Summit.

The divisional started a day early in an effort to deal with possible rain delays.

The top four singles players and doubles teams advance to state, which will also be held at Flathead Valley Community College on May 23-25.

The Whitefish boys and Polson girls are defending divisional and state champions.
