NW A title matches set

Northwestern A Divisional tennis action winds down today with finals and consolations matches on the courts at Flathead Valley Community College, weather permitting, or The Summit, if rain forces play inside. Action will begin at 8 a.m.

All total, 24 matches are scheduled.

The girls finalists are Gracie Smyley of Whitefish and Hannah Schweikert of Columbia Falls.

Polson’s Shea McGuinness, the defending divisional and state champion, lost to Smyley in the semifinals on Thursday, 6-3, 6-2.

The boys singles finalists are Brendan Buls of Whitefish and Joe McDonald of Polson.

In girls doubles, Berkley Ellis/Qia Harlan of Polson will face Aubrey Hanks/Olivia Potthoff of Whitefish for the divisional title.

In boys doubles, Mark Anderson/Colter Upton of Whitefish will face John Gilk/Camryn Lingle of Columbia Falls in the championship match.

Anderson/Upton and Gilk/Lingle, 11-0 on the season, did not face off against each other in the regular season.

“They played fabulous today,” Columbia Falls coach Michelle Colliander said of Gilk/Lingle.

“Their serves were on, they got to net, were talking ... it was fun to watch. If they keep playing like they have been, they can do it.”

Gilk was a divisional doubles champion a year ago with Tristan Grein, who has graduated.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to state play at FVCC next week. State action starts Thursday.
