No. 26249 May 23, 2019 Area Landowners Board of County Commissioners Re: Public Notification Letter Opencut Mining Permit: Lewellen Site - Flathead County, Montana To Whom It May Concern: Schellinger Construction Co., Inc. of Columbia Falls, Montana is submitting this letter as our official Public Notification for an amendment to the Lewellen Site (formerly Peschel Site) in Flathead County. The pit is located 1000 feet west of mile marker 133 on US Highway 92 North, west of Whitefish, MT. Access to the permit area will be directly from the existing access and approach from Highway 93. Signs will be posted at the pit site. This proposed amendment would update the current permit to allow the assignment of the permit from Schellinger Construction Co., Inc. to Lewellen Enterprises, LLC. Changes to the permit include increasing the permitted acreage to 24.9, changing the site name from Peschel to Lewellen, and increasing the bond to allow for proper reclamation of the site. It is estimated that approximately 950,000 cubic yards of material will be removed from the site through the life of the permit. Some of this material has already been removed since the site was originally permitted. The depth of excavation will not change and will remain at 40 feet. The site averages 10" of topsoil. Approximately 10,000 yards has already been saved for reclamation of the existing disturbance. Additional topsoil will be stripped and salvaged for any future disturbance and used for final reclamation. Mining at the site will continue as needed for construction projects in the area. Final reclamation, which includes re-establishment of vegetation, will be completed by December of 2045 to allow for the full use of this gravel resource. The site is hidden from the view of adjacent properties and the highway by existing timber, which will remain to preserve the scenic beauty of the area. The legal description of this site is: Section 31, Township 31N, Range 22W, Flathead County Send any questions, concerns or map requests regarding the Lewellen Site to: Schellinger Construction Co., Inc.
