Glacier takes AA title at Kalispell Kickoff
Glacier High School Speech and Debate pulled ahead of Flathead High School to win the Kalispell Kickoff in Class AA over the weekend.
Glacier earned 199.5 sweepstakes points, followed by Flathead’s 188.5. Missoula Sentinel placed third with 140.5 points. Glacier earned first place in six events, while Flathead won four events.
“It was a great tournament for our young team,” Glacier Head Coach Greg Adkins said. “To come into Flathead High and win the Kickoff is a huge accomplishment. We had some really exciting performances from our veterans and we had some newcomers have remarkable results.”
Flathead Head Coach Shannon O’Donnell anticipated the competition would be close.
“I’m proud of our team’s competitive effort, including the number of young competitors who out-performed expectations,” O’Donnell said. “I’m especially proud of their positive attitudes and displays of good sportsmanship, from our pre-tournament team meeting to their professionalism and positivity both during and after awards. Nothing makes me prouder than good kids supporting each other, as well as those from other teams.”
In Class A, Columbia Falls took first place with 71 sweepstakes points. Whitefish took second place with 27.5 points, followed by Frenchtown with 25. Whitefish won one event but was defeated by Columbia Falls’ more balanced performance.
Columbia Falls competed without their full team present due to SAT testing, but as Assistant Coach Kimberly Wortman noted, “we have yet to see any team’s full roster. These early wins are encouraging, but won’t become promising until we actually compete against the full field.”
Whitefish Head Coach Sara Mueller noted, I’m proud of the strong start from our team. They’ve been putting in some serious effort among the academic pressures of the end of a quarter. We’re going to have to keep it up to compete alongside Columbia Falls and a very good Frenchtown team.”
