Eureka bound for Class B semis; Libby blown out

EUREKA — For the third time in four years, the Eureka Lions are headed to the Class B football semifinals.

The 10-0 Lions overwhelmed the Columbus Cougars 69-30 in a quarterfinal game on Saturday.

Chet McCully’s 13 carries for 286 yards was a game high. McCully broke free for 40 and 63-yard touchdowns.

Quarterback Hank Dunn connected with Austin Sartori for a 69-yard score to open the scoring in the first quarter.

Eureka added four more touchdowns and outscored the Cougars 34-8 in the opening frame.

Columbus’ only score was when Caiden Meier hit Trey Stampfen for 88 yards and converted a play for two points.

The Lions led 55-24 at the half.

Hank Dunn threw five touchdown passes and rushed for one. He threw for 274 yards.

Sartori scored two receiving touchdowns and had three receptions for 91 yards. Also scoring two touchdows was AJ Pacella, who had four receptions for 91 yards. Jake Kindel scored a receiving and a rushing TD and had 7 carries for 30 yards and four receptions for 39 yards.

Eureka racked up 628 yards of total offense to Columbus’ 298.

The Lions are scheduled to meet the Red Lodge Rams at noon on Saturday at the Eureka High School Football Field.

Red Lodge blew out its quarterfinal opponent, Malta 35-6 on Saturday.

LAUREL — Libby’s postseason hopes came to an end with a shutout loss to the Laurel Locomotives on Saturday in a Class A quarterfinal playoff game.

The Loggers were unable to get on the scoresheet as Laurel cruised to a 50-0 win.

Laurel led 27-0 at the half. Ethan Renner scored four touchdowns.

Renner forced Libby’s Dawson Young to fumble in the game’s opening minutes. The ball was recovered by Jack Waddell, a play that jumpstarted Laurel’s offensive onslaught.
