Volunteers sought for income-tax assistance program

| November 12, 2019 4:00 AM

Volunteers are needed for the 2020 VITA — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

If you are good with numbers and enjoy working with people, you can help people in your community prepare and file their basic federal and state tax returns. Training is provided for the free VITA Program, which runs in conjunction with the AARP Tax Aide and United Way.

The program offers free tax preparation to people who generally make $54,000 or less, people with disabilities, the elderly, and taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Tax preparation will be available beginning Jan. 31 at the Winter Warm Up event and continue through April 15. Morning, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts will be available.

Volunteers are also needed as greeters, to help answer phones, as schedulers, intake workers and site coordinators.
