Frame of Reference Fine Art will host its third annual 235 Smaller Works Show featuring the original work of more than 80 artists from the United States and Canada, ranging in age from 18 to 91, including 46 female artists.
The show opens Friday, Nov. 22, with a cocktail reception with live music for the public from 5 to 8 p.m., and runs through the end of December. The carefully chosen collection is a celebration of rich diversity and talent, and includes work by established artists as well as those beginning to make their mark. The show will present 125 works in mediums including oil, pastel, pen and ink, photography, bronze and ceramic — and are sized and priced to make art available to all collectors, new and experienced alike.
The Smaller Works Show allows the gallery to introduce new talents to the area and to collectors, and to highlight finely crafted paintings and sculpture.
All works are original and sized at 235 square inches or smaller — the number 235 is based upon the Gallery’s address, 235 Central Avenue. The 235 square inches allows the artists to create something up to 12-by-18 inches, which is larger than a true miniature, yet still small enough to not require a big wall or a large table. This year’s offerings range from ceramic horses to polka-dot pen-and-ink mountain goats, and from exquisitely rendered portraits in oil to restful, pastel landscapes.
“We’re excited about the breadth of both styles and subject matter in the show, and we’re honored to have so many talented artists participating this year,” Gallery founder and president Derek Vandeberg said. “This is an exceptional collection and there’s sure to be something here to please nearly everyone.”
Private receptions to benefit the Hockaday Museum of Art, and the Glacier Conservancy will be held on Nov. 21 and 23, respectively.

Frame of Reference fine art gallery in Whitefish was established more than 20 years ago. The gallery shows almost exclusively original works created by both emerging and established artists with a connection to the wild places we call home; mediums include paint, glass, bronze, photography and wood.
