MANHATTAN — Winning three state championships in four years is an impressive and rare feat but the Eureka Lions pulled it off on Saturday in Manhattan.
Quarterback Hank Dunn threw a touchdown pass and rushed for two more as the Lions defeated the Manhattan Tigers 20-6 for their third Class B football title in four years.
Eureka finished the season a perfect 12-0. The Lions won state titles in 2016 and 2017.
The Lions were missing running back Chet McCully, who suffered an ACL injury in a semifinal game against Red Lodge. McCully rushed for 1690 yards and 22 touchdowns this season.
It didn’t seem to matter as Dunn rushed for 142 yards, passed for 54 and pulled down two interceptions in addition to his three scores.
Eureka averaged 47 points per game during the season but Manhattan’s tough defense kept the Lions down to 20. But that was enough to win, along with the Lions’ defense doing its part by limiting the Tigers to just one score. Manhattan averaged 36 points per game entering the chipper.
Manhattan’s QB Lane Veltkamp rushed for 95 yards, threw for 94 and had one passing TD.
Dunn intercepted Veltkamp twice. One interception set up a 53-yard TD run by Dunn as Eureka began to pull away in the second half.
