Total rainfall for Kalispell thus far this month has already surpassed the typical September average thanks to a weather system that soaked the region Sunday and Monday.

More than 1.6 inches of rain fell in Kalispell in the first nine days of September. The total monthly average is 1.38 inches, according to the National Weather Service in Missoula.

Kalispell set a new daily rainfall record Sept. 9 with a measurement of 0.77 inches for the day. The previous record was 0.73 on Sept. 9 of 1986.

Areas around Flathead Lake picked up significant totals in the 24-hour period Sept. 9, according to unofficial storm totals provided by the Weather Service.

The Finley Point area recorded 4 inches of precipitation, while areas around Bigfork registered between 2.4 and 3.25 inches. Swan Lake saw 3.28 inches of rain.

Another shot of wet weather is likely today as a system continues to bring moisture to the northern Rockies. Valley fog will impact the morning commute across the area, the Weather Service warned.

Building high pressure will usher in warmer temperatures approaching seasonal normals Thursday and Friday, but areas of valley fog could become dense in some areas.

Long-range forecasts show cool and wet weather lingering into next week.
