Thompson scores six against Capital, Whitefish boys stay undefeated

Skyleigh Thompson scored five of her team’s six goals in a dominating Western AA soccer win over Helena Capital.

Thompson scored her first four goals in the first half, starting with a burst in the 10th and 14th minutes to put her team ahead 2-0. Lily Tanko assisted on the first goal.

Then Thompson strung together two more to close the half out, scoring unassisted in the 33rd and 38th minutes. Flathead led 4-0 at the half.

The second half picked up where the first left off. Thompson found the net for the fifth time in the 62nd minute, assisted by Kami Darrow.

Ashlynn Whiteman capped things off with a goal in the 76th minute, assisted by True Gannon.

Flathead head coach Bledy Doda pointed to Thompson’s offensive explosion in the game.

“It was not only her day, but she’s a player that helps us a lot. Scoring five goals was great,” he said.

As a team, Doda said the win was one his team was looking for after a close game with Helena High on Friday.

“It was great to come out from the game that we played with Helena High and step up the next day and to give Capital 6 [goals]. Capital was a team that beat us twice last year. They’re a great team to play against,” Doda said. “We played one of our best games so far.”

Columbia Falls 6, Park 0

COLUMBIA FALLS — Josie Windauer scored a hat trick while Maddie Robison notched two goals of her own in the Wildkats’ Class A blowout of Park.

The Kats got on the scoreboard early, with Windauer hitting her first goal off a Robison assist just two minutes into the game.

Cheyanne Johnston-Heinz found the net in the 11th minute off a Flora Jarvis assist. Robison connected on her first goal in the 38th minute to put Columbia Falls up 3-0 at the half.

Windauer scored her next two goals in the 48th and 50th minutes. Those came off assists from Johnston-Heinz and Kate Hatfield.

Robison put the finishing touches on the blowout with her second goal in the 55th minute.

Head coach Thomas Clark said he was thrilled to see his team start fast.

“They came out with intensity. Scoring within two minutes of the game really sets the tone” he said. “It’s just a really good result against a strong opponent and I’m really excited for the challenges we have next week with Billings and Laurel.”

The Wildkats will travel to Billings to take on Central on Friday and Laurel on Saturday.

WHITEFISH — The Lady Bulldogs (2-3) couldn’t manage a shot on goal in a tough Class A matchup to Billings Central.

The Rams’ Morgan Ferestad added to her state-record goal count in the 11th minute for Billings’ first goal. That was followed by two more Billings scores, the second by Solei Elletson, in the 23rd and 31st minute to take a 3-0 halftime lead.

Zoie Altoff and Alivia Powers put the finishing touches on the win with goals in the 52nd and 59th minutes.

Whitefish head coach Roland Benedict praised the soccer Billings plays.

“Billings is a very good team. They did not lose anyone last year, really,” he said.

Billings had 23 shots on goal to Whitefish’s none, and Lady Dog keeper Sami Galbraith racked up 18 saves. Benedict looked at the game as a learning experience for his goalie.

“Sami Galbraith had an unbelievable game on goal. She saved us time and time again. It shows she’s definitely an all state goalkeeper,” he said.

Whitefish hosts Polson on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Emma Paulson scored the only goal as the Glacier Wolfpack (4-0-1) edged Helena High.

“I think today was probably one of the grittiest wins I’ve ever coached,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said. “Stats dont win games. Paulson came up huge for us and this was an absolute team victory.”

Wolfpack goalkeeper Sophie Smith made 10 saves.

Glacier plays Missoula Sentinel Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The Bulldogs’ Gabe Menicke had a breakout game in a 7-0 blowout over their eastern Class A opponent, Billings Central.

Menicke got the Dogs on the board with two quick goals in the third and ninth minutes, assisted by Ian Lacey and his brother, Sam Menicke.

Lacey got his own goal in the 16th minute, assisted by Sam Menicke as well, and Casey Schneider scored the first of his two goals in the 20th minute to close out the first half scoring barrage.

Gabe Menicke got right back at it in the 44th minute, assisted again by his brother. Schneider found the net again in the 52nd minute, and Chase Sabin tacked on a late goal in the 77th.

Whitefish (4-0) led Billings in shots on goal 18 to 4.

Bulldogs coach John Lacey said he’s been expecting a lot from Gabe Menicke this season, and Menicke delivered.

“Gabe Menicke had an outstanding game. He’s playing great soccer,” Lacey said. “We expected him to step up this year and he really has embraced it.”

Whitefish hosts Polson on Tuesday in a Northwest A conference matchup.

A two-goal second half wasn’t enough to rally the Braves past Helena Capital.

Helena jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half. Eric Gardner scored both of Flathead’s goals in the second half, while Helena tacked on one more goal.

Flathead head coach Zach Brenneman said his team was feeling it at the tail end of their back-to-back.

“Weekend games against Helena are always tough, playing on Friday night and Saturday morning,” Brenneman said. We had some injuries we were trying to overcome Saturday morning and just had a tough time getting started.”

Helena High 4, Glacier 3

Glacier couldn’t keep pace with three unanswered second-half goals — including a deciding own goal — from Helena High in a thriller.

Helena got the scoring going in the ninth minute, but the Wolfpack came back with two scores of their own to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

Zane Elliot scored the first goal in the 24th minute, while Micah Heil added another in the 30th minute.

Elliot notched his second goal, assisted by Heil, in the 64th minute, but after that the Wolfpack went cold.

Helena scored two unanswered goals in the final 16 minutes to tie the game at 3-3. Then a crowded net for Glacier led to a shot ricocheting off a Wolfpack player into their own goal.

Despite the unfortunate ending, head coach Ryan Billiet said his team played well for the end of a back-to-back.

“We played our best game of the season last night against Capital, then lost one of our starters to an injuries and we were just short in numbers,” Billiet said. “We played really well though, went up 3-1 and had a couple unlucky bounces.”

Following the own goal, the Wolfpack had a chance to take the lead for good with a penalty kick but couldn’t find the net.

“That one was definitely a heartbreaker. The guys were tired, but they never stopped fighting,” Billiet said.

COLUMBIA FALLS — The Wildcats scored two goals in the first five minutes and added two more late in the game to beat Park.

“We started to impose our style of play in they second half and we shut them out in the second half so we’re happy,” Columbia Falls coach O’Brien Byrd said. ”A little bit of first home game jitters.”

Simon Magg scored a goal and an assist. Johnny Tarl, Jason Albin and Niels Getts scored the Wildcats’ other goals.

Columbia Falls (2-2 overall, 1-1 conference) visits Billings Central on Friday for a game at 3 p.m.
