A 56-year-old Kalispell man was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center for a mental health evaluation after an hours-long standoff Wednesday with law enforcement officers.

According to information from Kalispell Police Chief Doug Overman, at about 3:15 p.m., Kalispell Police Department officers responded to a residence on the southwest side of Kalispell on Fourth Avenue West.

The incident evolved into the man barricading himself inside a storage building on the property.

The scene was secured by the Kalispell Police Department SRT team and the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.

“We deployed the Special Response Team because we believed there was a threat to people whom lived in the area,” Overman said.

A few minutes before 7 p.m., the man was taken into custody by law officers.

“We negotiated with him for a while, then we used a pole camera and determined it would be safe for us to go and get him from the shed,” Overman said.

Flash bang devices were used to distract the man and he was then arrested.

No charges are anticipated at this time, according to Overman.
