Arthur Richard Howell, 92

Arthur Richard Howell, 92, passed away Aug. 1, 2020, at Mountain View Manor in Eureka.

Art was born in the family home in Rathdrum, Idaho, on May 20, 1928, to William and Mary Howell. As a child, art attended school in Rathdrum, but he was mostly found hunting and fishing. At the age of 19, Art joined the army and was stationed in Germany where he served in the Korean War. He always said he loved the German beer. Art came to Montana at the age of 24 and began is lifelong career as a logger. He met and married Rosann Paradis from Whitefish where they started their life together in Olney. Art moved his family to Eureka a short time later, where they raised six children.

Through the years, Art logged in Eureka, Kalispell, McGregor Lake and Alaska. Art was the saw boss for King Logging, Graves Logging and Clyde Smith Logging. When Art retired from logging, Art and Rosann moved to Brookings, Oregon, where he was a commercial fisherman for a number of years. After returning to Eureka, they became campground host for the Forest Service for the past 23 years. They were at the Rexford Boat Ramp and later at Kamloops Terrace in Rexford. Art loved to catch and smoke fish with his special recipe. Visitors never left his house without a bag of smoked fish.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother, sons Walter and David Howell, and a grandson Jeff Howell.

He is survived by his wife Rosann, children Bill Howell, Matt Howell, Janet Howell and Mary Graehl; 23 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

A potluck memorial service will be held Aug. 15, at 4 p.m. at Kamloops Terrace campground in Rexford.
