Libby’s Beagle to UM for track

Libby sprinter Jay Beagle is among the athletes in Clint May’s first signing class as coach of the University of Montana’s track and field program.

May, named to take over after the resignation of Bryan Schweyen, was to have completed his second season as head cross country coach at UM this fall.

That season didn’t happen, nor did high school track and field in Montana in the spring. In 2019 Beagle, then a sophomore, ran times of 11.15 seconds in the 100, 22.63 in the 200 and 49.97 in the 400. He was third in the 400 at the 2019 State A meet.

Beagle is among three signees to the men’s program, as well as seven signed to the women’s team — including thrower Savana Ramirez of Milwaukie, Oregon, who joins her older brother Noah at UM; jumper Kolby Gibbs out of Laurel and distance runner Kathryn Whitehurst of Whitehall.

Griz soccer gets

U-20 Canadian

The University of Montana soccer team has signed Molly Quarry, a native of Bowen Island, British Columbia that in February played for Canada in the Women’s U-20 Championship.

The 5-foot-8 center is transferring to UM from Nebraska, where she spent the fall semester. Montana’s scheduled spring match against Portland State on March 12 would be her first since the CONCACAF U-20.

“It’s one thing to say we’re recruiting internationally. It’s another to say we’re recruiting players who played for their country,” Montana coach Chris Citowicki said. “It’s just phenomenal to get someone like her here.”
