The Kalispell Police Department wants to partner with businesses and homeowners in the Kalispell area to participate in a camera registration project in which homeowners and businesses can voluntarily register their external security cameras with the Police Department to help with possible investigations.

In the event of an investigation near a home or business, the department would contact the system owner to see if their cameras recorded events relative to the investigation. The cameras would still be legally protected and not accessible to law enforcement without the owner’s consent or a legal process, according to a press release.

Members of the Kalispell Police Department would not have the availability to remotely access or control a system through the registry.

“The system simply would be a registration program that would allow a quick synopsis of cameras in the area a crime was committed. The registry would save investigative time and efficiency, allowing for a more responsive police investigation,” the release stated. “The mapping initiative is another opportunity to partner together with community members to address public safety in the Kalispell area.”

The registration service reportedly works through a secured access point only available to law enforcement.
