Flathead girls 2nd at Helena 7 of 7

| October 9, 2020 10:54 PM

HELENA — The conditions weren’t perfect but the Flathead girls made the best of them Thursday, finishing second at annual Seven of Seven Meet Bill Roberts Golf Course.

It was a slimmed-down version of the late-season meet, with only Western AA teams invited. Races had at most seven to eight individuals, compared to 25-30 in the past, when all the AA teams competed.

Flathead coach Jesse Rumsey said that left runners who fell off the pace running by themselves on the two-lap course; still, her Braves edged into second, highlighted by race wins from Tori Noland-Gillespie, Neila Lyngholm and Nora Iams. The Braves scored 16 points, second only to Missoula Hellgate’s 12.

“Which is really good for us, because we’ve been kind of chasing Helena High (third, 18 points) all year long,” Rumsey said. “We had three of our lady runners win their races, which was incredible.”

The course was slow, Rumsey said, and the wind picked up in the afternoon. Nobody set a personal record Thursday: Flathead freshman Lilli Rumsey Eash’s time of 20 minutes, 21.6 seconds was over a minute slower than her personal best; Kensey May of Hellgate’s time of 19:08.06 — the best among the girls Thursday — was 25 seconds slower than her top time.

Glacier finished sixth in the girls’ team standings. The Pack’s top time came from Hannah Deck, who clocked 22:11.40.

On the boys’ side Sam Ells ran the third-fastest race among the boys though it was 40 seconds over his personal best: His time was 16:58.40. Flathead’s fastest time was provided by Seth Trumm, who ran the second race in 18:48.90.

Missoula Sentinel edged Missoula Hellgate for the boys’ team title; Glacier and Flathead placed fifth and sixth, with 38 and 39 points.

“It kind of does show where kids could potentially place at state,” Rumsey said. “The times were slow and it got pretty windy in the afternoon. But we just had a lot of really stiff competition and we really rose to the challenge.”

The state championships are Oct. 23-24 at Rebecca Farm. The Class A and B competitions are Oct. 23, with the AA and C running the next day.
