Glacier boys finish fourth at Western AA preview meet

Friday’s cross country meet at Rebecca Farm saw the Glacier Wolfpack finish in the top half of the boys’ team competition, which pleased first-year coach Cody Moore.

“We had a real nice grouping, which is kind of tough in the current (staggered-start) format,” said Moore, whose Pack scored 105 Friday. “But I was proud of the way they packed it up a little bit.”

Missoula Sentinel was a dominant first, scoring 28 points; Missoula Hellgate followed at 41. Helena Capital had 94.

Sam Elis led the Pack, finishing fifth in 16 minutes, 55.24 seconds. Sentinel’s Wyatt Mortenson was fourth at 16:53.83.

“(Elis) made up huge ground in the last mile,” Moore said. “The plan was to go out and be as relaxed as possible the first lap and see if you have some people to chase down the second.”

Glacier’s Jeff Lillard placed 15th, in 17:57.30, and Andrew Turner came across in 26th. As noted in Saturday’s Inter Lake, Seth Trumm was Flathead’s top finisher in 27th.

Rebecca Farm will be the site of this year’s state cross country championship on Oct. 24.

“We’ll have a couple more opportunities to race there again,” Moore said. “I think the guys are excited to get back and put in the work and see what we can do here in a month, month and a half.”

While Flathead’s girls with third, Glacier was sixth among seven teams on Friday.

Lilli Rumsey Eash of Flathead was eighth in the girls’ race and teammate Tori Noland-Gillespie was 14th. Kya Wood and Hannah Perrin finished 16-17.

Glacier’s top finisher was Bailey Gable in 19th, at 21:25.84.
