Law roundup: Remorseful thief returns man's bicycle

| August 6, 2021 12:00 AM

A regretful thief stole a man’s bicycle in Whitefish before returning it a few days later. The reformed person placed the bike in its original upright position with a note which said “I’m sorry.”

Someone called the Whitefish Police Department to report several neighbors on West Lakeshore Drive were putting their garbage out the night before pickup and none of the cans were bear-proof.

Members of a wedding party set off fireworks Saturday night at the end of the ceremony, causing much concern due to the state of current fire danger.

More concern over fire danger led a caller to report a man holding two gas cans and a “Believe in Jesus” sign while standing along the highway. An officer located him at a gas station with the sign and gas cans. He appeared to be trying to get gas. The officer said he would keep an eye out.

A woman called to express her concerns about drivers who “constantly blow through” a particular intersection. She wanted more patrols in the area and also expressed her feelings about the overall speeding issue in town she has heard about from others.

Someone believed his rental vehicle had been towed after it was parked near the theater. He was sure he parked it where he was standing, but a records check indicated it had not been removed. He called back and said he found his vehicle one block from where he thought it was parked.

A scruffy-looking transient with blonde hair and low-slung pants was moved along from a local store.

An officer helped a visitor get back inside their rental vehicle after the keys were locked inside.

Someone said he was struck by an Uber driver and didn’t report it because he thought he was OK. But he now said his leg was hurting. The driver stopped to see if the man was OK, but no one exchanged information. The pedestrian was looking for surveillance footage from area businesses in an attempt to determine who was driving the vehicle.

A local woman who had a protection order served on a man in New York called police in order to make sure the man knew the procedure. An officer called the man and clarified the no-contact order. She said she was watching him on a home camera and was concerned he may fly back to Montana to confront her.

A caller said an unknown person shot an arrow into the side of the house.

A pocket dial on No. 16 at the golf course resulted in an emergency communication.

A strange-looking man wearing a salmon-colored Grateful Dead T-shirt was seen lurking around the neighborhood.

A woman said one of her daughter’s classmates had made a video on social media poking fun at her child. The mother wanted to file a complaint and she was also told to block the person on her child’s social media accounts.

Someone asked for more police patrols in his neighborhood because a lot of wildlife crosses the road in the area and people are going really fast up and down the road.

A lady said three or four guys were sitting in a parked car drinking beer and making odd comments to people walking nearby. An officer determined the guys were drinking soda and were getting ready to leave.
