Flathead takes second at Tri-State tourney

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — One could say that the Flathead boys wrestling team had a pretty solid weekend.

The Braves brought home two champions, one runner-up and one third place finisher as well as four other placers from the prestigious Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d’Alene on Saturday night. Oh, and they also brought home the second place team trophy.

As a team, Flathead scored 191 points. Coeur d’Alene High won the tournament at 205.5 and Mead High was third at 164.

Gabe Lake (160 pounds) and Noah Poe-Hatten (182 pounds) are Tri-State champions and Chase Youso finished second to the No. 1 195-pound wrestler in the nation — Rylan Rodgers.

Fin Nadeau bounced back from a tough loss to claim third and 145.

Four other Brave Brawlers placed fifth — Aiden Downing at 113, Asher Kemppainen at 138, Cade Troupe at 152 and Anders Thompson at 170.

“We are very happy with where we are as a team this early in the season,” said Flathead coach Jeff Thompson.

“We are not satisfied, though. We are going to train very hard over break to improve on our work-on areas, especially our bottom wrestling and hand-fighting,” he added.
