Glacier grapplers split duals with Hellgate, Butte

Glacier got back on the mat Friday, splitting a pair of duals by beating Missoula Hellgate 54-22 before dropping a 47-18 decision to Butte High.

“I feel like we competed pretty well for being off the mat for almost two weeks,” said Glacier coach Ross Dankers, whose Wolfpack had to deal with a COVID-19 quarantine. “Butte is so balanced in their dual lineup and we battled at almost every weight.

“I’m especially proud of freshman T.J. Gannon dropping down to 160 for the team and getting a solid win, and Ethan Damaio getting a huge overtime win at 205. I look forward to these next couple weeks getting more competitions and practice time to get us ready for state."

Teegan Vasquez, Glacier’s state champion and ranked No. 1 at 120 pounds, won an anticipated matchup with Butte’s Kyler Raiha by fall. Raiha is No. 4 in the rankings.

The Glacier girls also wrestled and the Wolfpack held a memorial for three of its own Friday.

Former wrestler Donavon Macura died at the age of 19 while serving as a U.S. Marine in Japan in 2018; on Feb. 2 former wrestler and future Marine Tommy Crofts passed away in an automobile accident.

Future Glacier wrestler Maverick Bench passed away at age 9 on Jan. 11 from a rare blood disorder. The Wolfpack had a moment of silence for the trio.

“Tonight was a special night honoring three individuals that were special to our program who we lost too soon,” Dankers said.

On Monday Glacier goes on the road to face both Helena schools, making up duals that were earlier postponed. The Pack also has make-up duals for the following Monday, Feb. 22, at Missoula Sentinel and Big Sky.
