Flathead sweeps crosstown wrestling duals
It took Flathead wrestler Aleeya Derlatka less than a minute to get two pins Friday, one in each of her two matches in a crosstown dual with Glacier at Flathead High School.
Flathead won the dual, 43-33.
Taking the mat at 170 pounds, Derlatka pinned Glacier’s Madisyn Frazier in 21 seconds and Audrey Goodsell in 25 seconds. She’s ranked No. 1 in the state in her weight class.
Last year, Derlatka was wrestling boys and her experience shines through against her peers.
“She just did a very good job,” said Flathead assistant coach Sully Sullivan. “The other girls are working just as hard but she’s got a year of experience on some of them.”
Flathead’s Bella Arriaga, No. 1 ranked at 126, pinned second-ranked Emily Pedron of Glacier.
Number 2 ranked Emma Gambino, wrestling at 132, pinned Avery Anderson.
“Overall I think it went well, obviously we made a few little mistakes,” Flathead assistant Amber Downing said. “We still were able to come out on top. It’s kind of nice to see that we have this kind of competition right here in Kalispell to push all of these girls to continue to work hard and improve their technique and their strength.”
Glacier’s Maya Smith, No. 2 at 126, was injured in her match with Cadence Denney. McKenna McCarthy, a Glacier freshman wrestling at 152, won her first match of the season with a pin of Sara Harrison.
“A lot of energy and enthusiasm in the dual,” Glacier assistant coach Zach Barber said. “Our girls are getting better every single day. It’s incredible to look back at where they were three weeks ago when we first wrestled, to where they’re at now and everybody’s going out there with a lot of heart and enthusiasm.”
In the boys crosstown dual, Flathead was victorious, winning 49-18.
Notable performances were Asher Kemppainen at 138, pinning Seth Doolan of Glacier and Fin Nadeau at 160 pinning Grayson Barcus in 49 seconds.
Both teams were struck by the injury bug, resulting in forfeits at several weight classes. Glacier was missing four wrestlers.
The Braves wrestled very flat tonight even with a win over Glacier,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “It’s just challenging wrestling a team two times in three weeks. It just didn’t seem like we wrestled to our potential. We need to get a few of our wrestlers healthy and back in the line-up and on the mat next week.”
Glacier’s Kyle McCollam pinned Gabe Lake at 152.
“Overall I think it was a great improvement from our dual against them earlier this year,” said Glacier coach Ross Dankers. “It was tough with our 4 guys from 160-205 out with injuries, looking forward to having them back in the next few weeks.”
