Movie Night at the Museum features 1977 thriller ‘The Deep’

| July 22, 2021 12:00 AM

The Northwest Montana History Museum’s next Movie Night at the Museum will be Monday, July 26, featuring the 1977 treasure hunting epic “The Deep.”

A World War II shipwreck provides the setting and plot device for this 1970s adventure film, which pits amateur divers against a drug kingpin in a race for the sunken treasure.

With the first underwater movie footage filmed in Panavision, “The Deep” was praised for its photography even as other elements of the film have become a time capsule of 1970s cinema.

Set largely at sea, “The Deep” was obviously meant to invoke the uber-popular “Jaws,” which was released two years earlier in 1975. Not only does Robert Shaw play a similar role in each film (shark hunter Quint in “Jaws,” treasure hunter Romer Treece in “The Deep”), but both films were adapted from novels by Peter Benchley.

There is no charge for the film. Donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of showing the films. Popcorn is also free; wine, beer, pop and water will be for sale. Seating is provided, but film fans can bring their own floor pillows, portable chairs, or whatever is comfortable for viewing the film.

The Northwest Montana History Museum is located at 124 Second Ave E., Kalispell. Call 406-756-8381 for more information.
