Twins’ walk-off win gets them to title game

WHITEFISH — Jacob Polumbus’ single with none out in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie and the Glacier Twins stayed unbeaten at the Ed Gallo Invitational wood bat tournament, beating the North Spokane Dodgers 5-4 late Saturday.

Polumbus’ hit scored Stevyn Andrachick, whose leadoff single was his third hit of the game, and came after the Dodgers surged back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game in the sixth inning.

Ethan Keene’s 2-run triple was the big blow for the Dodgers; he scored on a double steal to tie it at 4-4.

Twins’ pitcher Mason Peters helped his own cause with an RBI single to start Glacier’s 4-run third inning; Andrachick followed with a 2-run double, though he was cut down trying to stretch it to a triple.

Zach Veneman singled with one out and scored the fourth run for the Twins (30-8) on Mikey Glass’ base hit.

The Polumbus RBI made a winner of Taylor Bryan, who came on with one out in the sixth and threw sparkling relief, giving up no hits or walks and striking out three.

Peters, aside from the rocky sixth inning, was very solid: Five hits and one hit allowed, with six strikeouts.

The win put the Twins in the 7 p.m. title game against The Crew out of Spokane. That contest had not been decided at press time.

The Crew 8, KV Rangers 0

The Kootenai Valley Rangers managed a single hit against The Crew out of Spokane at the Gallo tournament Saturday, in a game ended after five innings because of the mercy rule.

The Rangers’ tandem of Tristan Butts and Sammy Hall allowed seven hits and four walks, though Hall threw solidly over 2-plus innings of relief.

Corbin Hurst had the sole Kootenai Valley hit, a single, and Crew pitcher Jack Kovanen.

Kovanen allowed three walks and struck out six. Ian Maidhoff doubled, tripled and scored three times.
