Eureka girls hold off Fairfield at State B

BILLINGS — Katie Schmidt scored 11 points, Kyla Bohne added 10 and Eureka outlasted Fairfield 46-44 in a State B girls’ basketball loser-out game Friday at MetraPark.

The Lions (15-6) will next face Malta in another loser out game Saturday at 9 a.m. The M’ettes fell to Big Timber 56-43 in Friday’s first semifinal game.

Fairfield rallied after Bohne hit a 3-pointer at the third-quarter horn to put the Lions (15-6) up 36-29, and Rhianna Hawkins’ basket gave Eureka a 39-29 lead with 7:30 left in the game.

The Eagles scored the next nine points, starting with a three-point play by Kyler Bake, and closed to 39-38 on an Alexa Johnson 3-pointer.

Michael Shea hit two free throws with 47 seconds left and one more at :31 to boost Eureka’s gap back to 45-41, only to see Emma Woods bomb in another three for Fairfield. All of three of the Eagles’ 3-pointers came in the final 5:15.

Eureka got one more free throw from Schmidt with 8.9 seconds left, and then the Lions’ Reena Truman picked off a pass to seal it.
