Glacier’s boys almost pulled a fast one Thursday, pushing Missoula Sentinel in a dual track and field meet at the Wolfpack track before falling by one point.

Zac Crews won the 110-meter hurdles and javelin for the Spartans, who won the boys’ dual 73-72.

The Spartan girls, behind double-winners Alexis Knight, Brooke Stayner and Audrie McElmurry, cruised 94.5-46.5.

There were some excellent marks put up, including a boys’ 1,600 meters in which the top five placers — only the top three are scored at duals — moved into the top eight in Class AA. William Mortenson won at 4 minutes, 21.29 seconds; Glacier’s Sam Ells was third at 4:23.10, behind Sentinel’s Tanner Klumph (4:22.75). Those are the three fastest times in the state this spring, regardless of class.

Ells led a 1-2-3 Glacier finish in 800, clocking 2:03.83.

Glacier’s Jeff Lillard won the 400 in 51.69, which puts him No. 3 in AA; Sentinel’s Zac Crews (15.39, first) and Glacier’s Caleb Bernhardt (15.55) are now 3-4 in AA in the 110-meter hurdles.

Bernhardt also lowered his personal best in the 300 hurdles to 40.21, which leads Class AA.

Sentinel and Glacier went 1-2 in the long relay while running the best and third-best times in AA this spring. Sentinel won by 1.18 seconds, at 3:30.16.

Glacier’s Xavier Stout joined five other AA athletes at 6 feet while winning the high jump. Just four AA athletes have gone higher this spring.

Tate Kaufmann (triple jump) and Aiden Krause (discus) also won events for Glacier.

The race of the day was probably the girls’ short relay, which Sentinel won in 51.03, just .02 ahead of Glacier. Anchor leg Noah Fincher helped pull the Pack into ninth in AA for the event.

The quartet of Josie Nuce, Stella Claridge, Hannah Deck and Hanna Rainford led Glacier’s long relay to victory, and the Wolfpack also had wins from Emma Ritter (shot put) and Isabella Laine (3,200).

Stayner swept the hurdles, McElmurry took the long and triple jumps and Knight won the 100 and 200 for Sentinel. McElmurry increased her personal best in the long jump to 17-11.5.

Glacier standout Taylor Brisendine didn’t compete Thursday, while battling injury and having qualified for four events for state. The Wolfpack’s next action is the Western AA Divisional May 21-22 in Butte.
