The Hungry Horse Dam will be open to visitors beginning Memorial Day weekend.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said the Hungry Horse Dam visitor center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 28 through May 31.

Following the holiday weekend, the center will be open Friday through Sunday through June 13. Beginning June 18, the visitor center will be open daily through Oct. 9.

To safely open the visitor center, the bureau will follow the recommended guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fully vaccinated visitors are no longer required to wear a mask.

Exhibits about the history of Hungry Horse Dam and its importance to the federal Columbia River Power System are featured. Outdoor, guided walking tours will be available starting June 18 on a first-come, first-served basis. A maximum of 12 people are allowed on the tour. Tour availability is limited and subject to change. To sign up for the tour, please visit the visitor center front desk. For accessible accommodations, call 406-387-5241, extension 361.

Hungry Horse Dam is located off U.S. 2 in Hungry Horse. Signs located on U.S. 2 indicate the road leading to the visitor center. From U.S. 2 travel about 4.5 miles to the visitor center at the north end of the dam.

Parking is not permitted on top of the dam, but in designated areas only.

The dam has new visitor center guidelines, including:

  • If you are fully vaccinated (at least two weeks past your final dose), you are not required to wear a mask or socially distance.
  • If you are not fully vaccinated (less than two weeks past your final dose), please continue to wear a mask and socially distance 6 feet apart, consistent with CDC requirements.
  • Plexiglass panels will be placed throughout the gallery space to assist with social distancing.
  • There will be one designated entry point into the visitor center and one designated exit point.
  • There is a maximum capacity of 14 people inside the visitor center.
  • Hand sanitizer stations will be available inside and outside the visitor center.
