LAUREL — Saturday brought sunnier skies and more shiny, new hardware for the Whitefish Bulldogs’ girls track team at the State A/B track meet.

The Bulldogs finished second with 76.5 points behind winner Laurel (97), which won its first girls championship in program history. Whitefish was the 2019 champion, and the meet was not held in 2020.

Mikenna Ells won the 200 meter dash, her second gold of the meet, but was edged by freshman teammate Brooke Zetooney in the 100. The race was extremely close — Zetooney ran 12.65 in the event, Ells clocked in at 12.67.

Zetooney was fourth in the 200.

Whitefish freshman Hailey Ells ran to fifth in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300s.

“It was exciting to see them (freshmen) get some points and contribute to second place,” Whitefish girls coach Kelliann Blackburn said. “It was a good meet.”

Whitefish is heavy with youngsters and the cupboard looks to be stocked for the years to come.

Columbia Falls had a double-winner of its own in Lara Erickson, who won the 1,600 (she won the 3,200 Friday). Her sister Siri was second.

Alexis Green helped rack up points for Columbia Falls with her fourth-place triple jump of 34 feet, 3 inches.

The Wildkats were third in team standings with 54.5 points.

Hamilton ran away from the boys’ Class A field with 97 points to second-place Dillon’s 61.

The Whitefish boys were helped to seventh place by Bodie Smith’s third in the 110 hurdles and Gabe Menicke’s winning triple jump of 44-3.

Libby ended up eighth, due in large part to Jay Beagle’s third in the 200 and fourth in the 100. Beagle won the 400-meter dash Friday.

Columbia Falls’ Allec Knapton was third in discus with a throw of 146-2.

In Class B, the Bigfork girls were 10th overall. Big Timber (67 points) was first.

The Valkyries won the long relay, edging Manhattan by a hair. Scout Nadeau was fourth in the shot put, Inga Turner was sixth in the high jump, and Zoe Albert was sixth in the javelin.

Eureka’s Remmi Stanger was third in the high jump.

Bigfork’s boys were fifth overall among Class B teams with 35 points.

Viking high-jumper Wyatt Duke was third (6-2) in his signature event, where Huntley Project’s Noah Bouchard defended his title with a jump of 6-4, a day after an injury in the hurdles trials.

Duke also finished sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Isak Epperly was a few ticks behind Jefferson’s Braden Morris in the same event (15.40) and finished second.
