History Museum shows director Richard Linklater’s ‘Before Sunrise’
The Northwest Montana History Museum’s next Movie Night at the Museum will screen the 1995 romantic drama “Before Sunrise” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23.
The synopsis of the film is simple: Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) meet on a train and spend a night wandering around Vienna. But within this humble plot, director Richard Linklater deftly paints a vivid picture of humanity, exploring themes of cynicism, romance, self discovery and the passage of time.
Linklater is known for loosely-structured narratives and an overly-ambitious filmmaking style. His debut film, 1990's “Slacker,” is nothing more than a series of unconnected vignettes filmed around the Austin, Texas, area, but has since been named to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. 2014's “Boyhood” was famously filmed over a 12-year span with the same characters and plot narrative. And “Before Sunrise” was followed by two sequels, each filmed and set nine years after the preceding film: 2004's “Before Sunset” (which also takes place in real-time) and 2013's “Before Midnight.”
