BOZEMAN — Glacier’s boys golf team had an excellent day Thursday, with four golfers among the top 15 after the first round of the State AA tournament at Cottonwood Hills.

The Wolfpack still trails Gallatin by eight strokes.

Jordan and Justus Verge each fired 71 to lead the individual race and help the Raptors to a first-day total of 294. Glacier shot 302, an excellent score, with Will Salonen’s 74 leading the way; Helena Capital sits third at 311 and defending champion Missoula Sentinel is next at 314.

The tournament concludes Friday, and the Pack has some ground to make up. Still, with Trey Engellant (75), Tyler Avery (76) and Sam Engellant (77) all scoring well, there’s a chance.

Keaton Cassidy had an 83 for Glacier, while Butte’s Jack Prigge and Capital’s Joe McGreevey fired even-par 72.

Sentinel’s Kade McDonough, the defending AA boys medalist, sat in a four-way tie for seventh along with Trey Engellant, Gallatin’s Ramey Llloiyd and Dutch Teders of Capital.

Flathead’s low score Thursday came from Drew Lowry, who shot 81 and sat in a tie for 25th.

Billings West is running away with the girls’ team race, with 320 strokes to 355 for Gallatin. Glacier (393) is sixth and Flathead (445) is eighth.

Leading West is sophomore Bella Johnson, who fired a 71 and leads the medalist race by 11 strokes. Glacier’s Chloe Tanner is among four girls tied for second at 82; teammate Stella Claridge is in a four-way tie for ninth with an 85.

Flathead’s Jillian Wynne was 14th after an 87.
