New choral ensemble forming in the Flathead Valley

| October 7, 2021 12:00 AM

Auditions are being held for a new choral ensemble. The Treasure State Singers, under the direction of Phil Harris, will consist of 16 adult singers. The group will perform a wide variety of choral literature — everything from classical to contemporary, folk songs, show tunes and spirituals — music that is familiar and some that is not so familiar. The singers will begin rehearsals for an upcoming Christmas concert, to be held tentatively on Dec. 12.

Director Phil Harris comes to the group with vast experience as a choral director. He earned his music degree from the University of Montana, and has been directing choirs for many years in the Northwest United States and Western Canada. He currently directs a semi-professional choral group, the Treasure State Chorale, and he hopes this new ensemble will be a Flathead Valley version of the chorale.

Harris and his wife, Francine, have made Kalispell their home, and look forward to contributing to the fine arts in the Flathead. Francine serves as the accompanist for the choirs. In addition to accompanying, she also teaches piano and has many years of experience teaching at all levels of proficiency.

Auditions will be held in Kalispell. Call 406-396-3933 to arrange an appointment. Auditions will involve singing a simple piece, and a test of range, tone quality and pitch. Phil emphasizes that these auditions are not meant to be stressful, and he will make you feel as comfortable as possible. He encourages all to give it a try.
