Getting bureaucrats out of the way of forest management
A plume of smoke from a prescribed burn rises east of Whitefish Mountain Resort on Tuesday afternoon while a pair of people walk through a field off Denver Street in Whitefish. The Flathead National Forest conducted burns east of the resort as part of the Whitefish Municipal Watershed Fuel Reduction Project and was expected later in the day to conduct burns to the west of the resort as part of the Taylor Hellroaring Project. Now that the blazes have burned out, Montana should reassess what it can do to reduce future wildfire risk. As our fire seasons become longer, more severe, and more expensive, we must improve forest management across the 85 percent of Montana forests at elevated risk of wildfire. Prescribed burns need to be a part of the solution...
